About Compress Image

Compress Image shrinks JPG, PNG, and WebP files at a quality you choose, and can limit the longest side so portrait photos shrink too. Extra JPG camera data is removed when that saves more space than encoding the photo again. PNG photos are reduced to fewer colors, while flat graphics stay lossless when that file is smaller. If a result would not be smaller, the original is kept.

How to use Compress Image

  1. Add one or more images.
  2. Choose an output format, a quality level, and an optional limit on the longest side.
  3. Select Compress images.
  4. Download files individually or all at once as a ZIP.

Examples

Website images

Saving a phone photo as WebP at 75% quality, with the longest side limited to 1920 px, is the usual way to fit it on a page.

Email attachments

Compress a batch of photos so they fit under an email attachment limit.

Limitations

  • PNG photos are reduced to fewer colors, so smooth gradients can show bands. JPG or WebP is smoother for those photos.
  • Animated GIFs are flattened to their first frame.
  • Camera metadata is removed from the compressed file. If the original is kept, its metadata stays.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Images are decoded and re-encoded by your browser on your device. Utilhex never receives them.

Which quality should I choose?

75–85% is usually close to the original for JPG and WebP. PNG photos use fewer colors as the quality drops. If the new file would be larger, the original is kept.

Is photo metadata (EXIF) kept?

The compressed file is rotated upright and camera metadata such as GPS is removed. If the original was already smaller, that file is kept with its metadata.
